It started with an urgent message from Marie. While enjoying time on a lake in Marmora, Ontario, her white gold wedding band and engagement ring slipped off into waist-deep water.
Losing a ring in open water is every couple’s worst nightmare. Waves move, sand shifts, and without clear landmarks, a lost item can feel gone forever. Marie and her family loaded the family boat and headed out early in the morning to attempt a surface search using goggles. Against the odds, Marie managed to find her wedding band sitting on the lakebed! But the crown jewel—her stunning white gold engagement ring—remained buried somewhere in the firm sand.

When a ring is lost in water, time is the enemy. I rearranged my schedule, lined up childcare for my 5-year-old son, Caspian, and hit the road toward Marmora.
Because I was traveling by car without a vessel, Marie coordinated with local cottage owners along Sandy Beach Road. Generous waterfront neighbors granted property access so I could park and gear up right on the shoreline near the loss zone.
By 1:45 PM, I met Marie on-site. Before stepping into the water, Marie shared a vital clue from photo timestamps: her wedding band had been sitting directly on top of her engagement ring when it was dropped. This confirmed both rings fell in the exact same spot—the engagement ring had simply sunk slightly deeper into the sand.
The Search: 1 Hour in the Water
I waded into the cool, 2-3 foot-deep water, swinging my Simplex Ultra metal detector in a tight, methodical grid sweeping over the target zone.
Searching shallow water with a firm sand bottom requires patience. Every target signal must be scooped carefully to avoid pushing small jewelry deeper into the sediment. Neighboring cottagers sat on their docks and decks, watching the search unfold from the shore.
Roughly one hour into the search, my detector gave off a crisp, high-conductive tone—the signature signal of gold.
I set the scoop down, put on my mask and snorkel, took on a full breath and Dove to the bottom sifted through the wet sand with my pin pointer, and pulled it up. There it was: shining brightly through the water, arguably the most beautiful diamond ring I’ve ever had the privilege to recover.
The Reunion: A Moment to Remember
As I turned toward Marie and held out the ring, the emotion in the water completely overflowed.
Marie couldn’t hold back her tears and let out pure screams of joy, jumping up and down in the two-foot water. The excitement was so loud and infectious that cottagers all up and down the waterfront began cheering, clapping, and coming over to see the ring and congratulate us on the rescue.
Her husband was beyond relieved, and Marie’s friends were thrilled to see the mission end in total success.
