James Mathias
James is a dedicated enthusiast of history and the outdoors. Using state-of-the-art equipment, he built Ontario Ring Recovery Services entirely because of the sheer joy he gets from returning lost and sentimental items to people who lost them.
How It Started (2021)
James’s journey into metal detecting began in 2021. What started as a fascination with tracking down old coins, historical pieces, and lost jewelry quickly evolved into a profound passion for helping others recover what matters most.
After James was able to successfully recover a woman’s lost family heirloom on Amherst Island while spending time on a local beach with his wife and son, and after seeing the emotion that took over the woman once he found the item was when James decided that he needed to take the hobby a bit more seriously and that this type of service was a gap that needed to be filled.
Leadership & Publishing
- South Eastern Ontario Metal Detecting Club (SEOMDC): In 2023, James founded the SEOMDC to unite regional hobbyists and foster a strong community, serving as its president from its founding to the present day.
- Author: Combining his extensive field experience with a desire to educate others, James has written and self-published two metal detecting books describing his own experiences in his first few years of detecting.
Ontario Ring Recovery Services
- Founding: Recognizing a vital need for specialized, localized recovery assistance after previously being part of another global recovery service, James officially founded Ontario Ring Recovery Services in 2024.
- Partnership: In 2025, James brought on close friend and fellow detectorist Ryan Pugh to help co-found the business. Together, James and Ryan frequently conduct recoveries in the Kingston, Ontario region.

A Growing Provincial Network
James hand-picks team members throughout the province based on information he receives and through social media outlets. He has met in person and/or gotten to know every detectorist on this website, and the list is continuously growing. His ultimate vision is to have enough detectorists eventually to cover every major city or town throughout the province so no one is unable to locate a recovery specialist for their area.
