Late-Night Heroics in Midland: A Lost Gold Cross Returned

When a precious item slips through the cracks, time is always of the essence—especially when water is involved.

It was 6:30 PM, and my 5-year-old son’s birthday party was just coming to an end. As guests were heading out the door and party clean-up was beginning, an urgent call came through from Matteo, a distraught local in the Midland, Ontario area. While out by the water, his sentimentally irreplaceable gold cross necklace had slipped off a dock and vanished into the lake.

Juggling the final moments of a 5-year-old’s birthday party while coordinating an emergency recovery isn’t standard routine, but losing a valued piece of jewelry creates an immediate sense of panic—and underwater metal detecting is exactly what our team prepares for.

The Midland Dock Recovery

Right as the party wrapped up, I logged Matteo’s details, got in touch with search specialist Paul Davis, and set the recovery plan in motion. Operating on short notice late at night, Paul packed his specialized underwater detecting equipment and headed straight for Midland.

Locating lost metal under docks and in murky lake water requires precise technique, waterproof metal detectors, and a whole lot of patience. In low-visibility conditions, visual searching is virtually impossible, meaning every audio target from the detector counts.

Reunited with a Cherished Keepsake

By 9:45 PM, a message popped up with the update we always hope for: a photo of a relieved and happy Matteo holding his recovered gold cross necklace.

Every recovery has its own story, but returning a deeply personal item to a grateful owner makes the late-night drive and hustle completely worth it. A huge thank you to Matteo for trusting our team, and outstanding work by Paul Davis for executing a swift, successful recovery!

The tackle that lost the gold cross….

I was contacted by Matteo who was spending the weekend at a cottage near midland. He and his buddies were throwing a football around and when he was tackled, by Matteo2 (yes the second Matteo), the gold chain was pulled from his neck and unfortunately he held on to it. However the gold cross fell into the water.
As my friend James says, it’s usually never in the exact area where the customer believes it is.
Upon searching in the customers search box, I then further clarified exactly what happened and the cross was found shortly thereafter.
Yay, another happy customer
