The daylight was just beginning to fade when the message flashed across the screen. Another successful recovery logged, but more importantly, another priceless memory handed back to its owner.

It had all started earlier in the day with a familiar ping on Facebook—a frantic post about a lost tungsten wedding band submerged somewhere beneath the surface. Knowing the exact right person for the job, the call went out to Thunder Bay recovery specialist Rien Fehrling. Without hesitation, Rien geared up and headed out to answer the call for a local dad named Thomas, who was holding out a thread of hope that his ring wasn’t lost to the depths forever.
Stepping into the cool water, Rien began his systematic grid search. The water sat around three and a half feet deep—shallow enough to wade, but murky enough to make visual searching impossible. Every sweep of the detector coil was a exercise in patience. First came a sharp tone in the 23–30 range, which turned out to be an old button buried in the silt. A few passes later, the machine signal picked up a jagged piece of a broken boat propeller blade, followed shortly by an abandoned fishing swivel. Trash, debris, and false alarms—the usual metal detecting obstacle course.
Rien kept sweeping. Forty-five minutes into the search, the steady hum of the detector was cut short by a clean, unmistakable sound. The Nokta Legend lit up with a rock-solid, slamming 40 VDI on the display. Deep water, zero vision, but a perfect target signal.
Instead of just scooping it up himself, Rien called Thomas over into the water.
”Here’s your ring,” Rien said, handing over the underwater pinpointer. “Take this and pick it up yourself.”
Thomas looked at him, half-amused and entirely skeptical. “You sure?”
”Yes,” Rien replied with a grin.
Thomas reached down into the cold target zone, guided by the vibrating pulse of the pinpointer. His fingers closed around the solid, heavy metal resting in the muck. When he lifted his hand out of the water and opened his palm, the tungsten wedding band caught the evening light.
A massive smile broke across Thomas’s face—pure relief and utter disbelief.
”A big thanks to Kingston Recovery!” Thomas beamed, another happy dad who thought his ring was gone for good, now heading home with his wedding band back where it belonged. And as a final nod of respect for a job well done, he bookmarked the recovery site before they left the water.
Another successful mission in the books, proving once again that no matter where the search takes us across Ontario, the right crew and the right gear can bring the impossible back to the surface.
