Dropping a primary set of car keys into the water is a fast way to turn a beautiful day on the boat into a high-stress emergency—especially when it involves a modern electronic key FOB.

Yesterday afternoon, we received an urgent call from Mary, who had accidentally dropped her new Toyota key FOB straight off the dock beside her boat at the Loyalist Cove Marina in Bath, Ontario. Knowing we needed a skilled underwater recovery specialist on the scene, I immediately connected her with our go-to local diver, Carlos Vas. Being based right in the area, Carlos coordinated with Mary to meet at the marina docks first thing the following morning.
When Carlos arrived at 9:00 AM, conditions were ideal with calm, crystal-clear water. Having a precise mark on the drop location makes a massive difference in deep-water retrievals, and Mary was able to pinpoint the exact slip where the FOB went under.

Carlos geared up in his full scuba setup and descended to the harbor floor in roughly 6 feet of water. Sweeping the bottom with his Minelab Excalibur II metal detector, it didn’t take long to lock onto a sharp, high-conductive signal right in the target zone. Within 16 minutes of hitting the bottom, Carlos retrieved the key FOB from the silt, surfaced, and handed the working keys

(after drying them and checking the batteries for her) right back to a very relieved Mary.
