My friend and fellow detectorist Rien Fehrling reached out last night regarding a fresh case up in Thunder Bay, Ontario. A local resident’s friend had a ring dropped—and subsequently lost—by a thief right in their own yard.
True to form, Rien didn’t waste any time. Heading up to the property at 11:30 this morning, he anticipated a thorough search for the displaced heirloom. Instead, the mission turned out to be remarkably short-lived. It took less than a minute of swinging to pinpoint the target and reunite the owner with the recovered piece.
A Subtle VDI Surprise
One of the most interesting takeaways from the recovery was how the target presented on the machine. Rien noted that the detector locked onto a high 58 VDI reading on his Nokta Legend.
Naturally, a number like that had him assuming it was a solid silver piece resting in the soil. But as every experienced hunter knows, modern alloys and specific target geometries can frequently mimic high-end signals. When the item popped out of the ground, it proved that context, machine familiarity, and a solid swing are what ultimately deliver the goods.
