Sometimes, everyday yard work or a simple mix-up can take an unexpectedly stressful turn in a matter of seconds. That was certainly the case for Kathy and her family, who experienced a heart-stopping moment when a deeply cherished family heirloom vanished into thin air.
The Disappearing Heirloom
The story behind the missing piece made the situation all the more critical. Patrick had been given his late dad’s special ring to have, and wear it when he got married.
During a yard cleanup involving some hostas, the ring was accidentally scooped up along with debris and mistakenly tossed out onto the open lawn.
Realizing what had happened, Patrick immediately stopped what he was doing and told his family, “We need somebody with a metal detector”. Fortunately, they knew exactly who to call to handle the recovery.
Teaming Up for the Search
Teaming up with my good friend and fellow recovery specialist Ryan Pugh, we headed out to the property to scan the lawn and track down the missing treasure. After mapping out the general area where the hostas and yard waste had been discarded, we suited up and got right to work with our detectors.
I started working near the hostas, carefully listening to the ground. It didn’t take long before my detector locked onto a gorgeous, shallow high-tone signal reading right in the mid-30s. I knelt down, parted the grass, and sure enough, there it was: the stunning, long-lost family heirloom resting right in the soil.
A Joyful Reunion
We immediately jumped on a FaceTime call with Patrick to share the incredible news. Watching his reaction on screen when he saw the recovered ring was absolutely priceless.
Handing the family treasure back to Kathy brought an overwhelming wave of relief and happy tears after such a stressful and emotional week.
Moments like this remind me why I love this hobby so much. Being able to step in, use our equipment, and return a priceless piece of family history is an incredible feeling.
