You may hear others say that because this is a hobby or something they do for “fun,” no one should ever charge to help return lost items, or, that businesses like ours “prey on others’ misfortunes.” I see posts like this on social media all the time, however,

We feel It is important to be transparent about why a fee is charged.

Professional metal detecting requires specialized equipment, extensive knowledge on the use of equipment, travel time, fuel costs, and expertise. We charge for our time, the wear and tear on our vehicles and equipment, fuel, and our professional skills to ensure we can remain dedicated to this specialized work and provide a reliable service for every client. A Note on Success Rates:

A recent drop at a beach while playing volleyball or other recent activities, our success rate is very high between %85 to %90 however, Please understand that hiring a detectorist is not a guarantee that the item will be recovered. Some searches can be unsuccessful and for many reasons—perhaps the item was not lost in the suspected area, or someone else may have already found the item. Maybe you lost an item many years ago and you see a post like this and think to yourself, ( maybe these folks can find a ring you lost 20 years ago) while these situations do come across our table from time to time, and we definitely have found several items like this in the past. Finding a lost item decreases to lower than %50 if an item has been lost for a long period of time, such as 10 years plus

We think this is mainly due to memory and thinking an item was lost in a specific location when in fact it may have been somewhere completely different to the person’s memory. Other factors include if the item was lost in a public area, then the chances it was picked up by someone over time greatly increase. Infact our success rate drops significantly if you wait even a day or 2 to call us unless it was lost on your own property or in the water in a low populated area.

Regardless of the outcome, the time, effort, and costs associated with any recovery are still incurred by the detectorist, who also takes on the responsibility of delivering the difficult news that the item was not found. For this reason we implemented a non negotiable small “CAll OUT” fee.

I have personally spent hours searching a spot only to come up empty-handed, only to later learn the owner found their item elsewhere days or even weeks later. A detectorist may drive hundreds of kilometers and spend hours to look for an item that may not have even been there to begin with! We don’t think it would be fair to the detectorist to have to pay out of pocket for such a scenario. Let’s face it, it’s not the detectorist that misplaced the item to begin with.

Investment: Costs vary depending on the distance traveled and the time required to complete the recovery, typically ranging from $50 to over $500 in some cases. Especially if an item was dropped in deep water and requires a diver. (Then that’s a whole other can of worms). This type of recovery requires a specific skill set and even more specialized equipment that can cost tens of thousands of dollars.
