About
James Mathias
Hi, I’m James Mathias. I am a dedicated historical relic hunter, a self-published author of 2 metal detecting books, and a community-driven entrepreneur. Based in Amherstview, Ontario. Driven by a passion for preserving history and a deep commitment to public service, I have built my life around helping others, fostering community, and promoting responsible, ethical metal detecting practices.
I am the proud founder and President of the South Eastern Ontario Metal Detecting Club (SEOMDC). I created the SEOMDC to bring together passionate, like-minded detectorists from Trenton to Kingston, and stretching all the way to Brockville. Our club serves as a vital hub for both beginner hobbyists and experienced relic hunters in the historic St. Lawrence and Lake Ontario regions. Through collaborative events, historical research, and prominent regional group hunts.
We bridge the gap between modern recovery and the preservation of Canada’s past. We strictly adhere to the Metal Detecting Code of Ethics, preaching a simple rule: respect the land, fill your holes properly, pack out the trash, and leave nothing but footprints.
My dedication to community outreach also led me to establish the Ontario Ring Recovery Services, a specialized, professional lost-item recovery operation. What started as a local service for Southeastern Ontario has rapidly grown into a massive network of reputable detectorists spanning the entire southern Ontario stretch from Windsor to Prescott along the 401 corridor, much of Central Ontario, and even up to Thunder Bay. Utilizing advanced, industry-leading metal detecting technology, we specialize in systematic grid searches across both land and water—including challenging, high-mineralization environments, beaches, and underwater recoveries.
Built on trust, integrity, and rapid response, we offer an emergency hotline for time-sensitive losses like winter snow-cover or deep-water drops, maintaining a high success rate of reuniting people with their deeply sentimental jewelry, keys, and irreplaceable family heirlooms.
When I’m not managing recoveries or leading club events, I document my historical journeys, deep relic hunts, and large-scale collaborative group digs on my YouTube channel, Relic Expeditions.
Because of my active leadership and advocacy within the hobby, I also proudly serve as a sponsored National Brand Ambassador for Pull Tab Gear, where I continually work to elevate the profile of responsible metal detecting.
Whether I am bringing local hobbyists together to preserve regional history, writing about my experiences, or coordinating a rapid-response search to bring peace of mind back to a family, my work is entirely focused on helping others and honoring our shared heritage.
Pull Tab Gear (PTG) Ambassador: Recognizing his expertise and community presence, James has served as an official brand ambassador for Pull Tab Gear since April 2026, proudly representing the company on a national level.
